BER Pallets, Salvage Stock and Spares: Where the Value Really Is

BER means beyond economical repair. It does not necessarily mean every component is useless, and it definitely does not mean the stock is suitable for an inexperienced buyer looking for quick, clean resale.

BER pallets, salvage stock and spares or repair lots have a proper place in the recovery chain. In the right hands they provide donor parts, repairable units, recyclable materials and stock for specialist resale. In the wrong hands they become an expensive pile that moves from one warehouse to another.

Why businesses buy BER pallets

• Repair workshops may recover several saleable units from a mixed pallet.
• Parts sellers can dismantle products with known demand for components.
• Refurbishers may have test equipment, technicians and spares already available.
• Specialist recyclers can separate materials and dispose of residual waste correctly.
• Export or trade buyers may have different repair economics and established downstream markets.

What BER does not tell you

The label alone will not tell you why each item failed, whether it is complete, whether previous repair has been attempted or how much of the pallet is recoverable. Unless a listing specifically says otherwise, budget on the basis that faults may be serious and multiple.

Electrical salvage also needs competent handling. Safety testing, data removal, battery condition, refrigerants and waste obligations can all matter depending on the product. A low hammer price does not remove those responsibilities.

How to assess a salvage or spares lot

• Identify models with parts demand rather than relying on total unit count.
• Separate likely donor value from optimistic repair value.
• Allow technician time for inspection, dismantling and testing.
• Include responsible disposal of anything that cannot be recovered.
• Check whether packaging, remotes, cables, shelves or fixings are present.
• Price collection and loading before bidding.

Recovery is the point
